Over 8,500 Australians are currently receiving dialysis for kidney failure and this is set to grow by at least 5 - 7% per year
Nearly 6 million Australians have registered to donate – which is one of the highest rates in the world
We have world-leading success rates – over 90%
Only around 200 deceased donors throughout all of Australia each year – in 2006, there were 202 deceased donors
In 1989 there were 231 deceased donors.
There are only around 700 people that benefit yearly from this life-saving therapy (deceased donors)
There are over 1800 people on the official waiting list. However, this does not truly reflect the size of the problem within Australia. Because the number of donors is so low, thousands of people don’t even get onto the list until they are in desperate need. Many get too sick to have a transplant because it was not available early enough in the development of their disease.
Over 25% of those on the official list die waiting.
